Disk Pain – Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Bad disc in your neck…The 4 CLASSIC SIGNS

Disc pain in your neck can wreck havoc on your life and getting proper disc pain treatment doesn’t make it any easier. Let me explain. Discs are simply the spacers between your spine.  They act as shock absorbers.  Have you ever ridden in or seen a car with bad shocks?  It is extremely uncomfortable as you go over bumps.  This is similar to a problem when discs are not working properly… your spine compresses together.

diskThere are different types of damage that can occur to the discs.

Herniation or slipped disc asome people like to call it is when the disc protrudes or bulges which can cause a lot of pain or discomfort.

Degeneration is when a disc is literally wasting away by drying out, being worn out via misaligned vertebrae or abnormal compression. It is literally dying. This can cause pain in the area of the damage.

Signs of a disc problem in the neck

  • Pain that radiates down the arm.
  • Pain when lifting up the arm.
  • Numbness or tingling along a certain defined area of the arm as outlined below.
  • Intermittent numbness in the fingers of one hand and not the other
    • 4th and 5th finger(pinkie) of hand
    • Middle finger
    • Thumb and index finger
    • Combination of any of the above

Signs of a disc problem in the Low Back

  • Low back pain above the beltline
  • Pain radiating down a leg. Usually one or the other. Rare to have it in both.
  • Numbness or burning sensation over a defined portion of the leg. Eg: Upper thigh but not the lower leg.
  • Difficult getting out of a sitting position
  • Pain when you have a cough, sneeze or hard bowel movement
  • Numbness in the toes

Do You Have Disc Problems?

If you are having trouble with your discs or you suspect that you may have disc problems, your only 2 options are a chiropractor or a major surgery (which may or may not work).  Spine magazine published a study recently outlining how patients faired two years after low back surgery.

Here’s what they found:

  • Only 26{9af40bf80e52f11aa5d7472b6ee2426c1e641e46093dbc3d29b8bc21a0ebb17e} of surgery patients were able to get back to work.
  • 36{9af40bf80e52f11aa5d7472b6ee2426c1e641e46093dbc3d29b8bc21a0ebb17e} had some kind of post-surgical complication and 27{9af40bf80e52f11aa5d7472b6ee2426c1e641e46093dbc3d29b8bc21a0ebb17e} needed another operation.
  • 76{9af40bf80e52f11aa5d7472b6ee2426c1e641e46093dbc3d29b8bc21a0ebb17e} needed opioid pain medication after the surgery (opioid use increased by 41{9af40bf80e52f11aa5d7472b6ee2426c1e641e46093dbc3d29b8bc21a0ebb17e} after the surgery).
  • 11{9af40bf80e52f11aa5d7472b6ee2426c1e641e46093dbc3d29b8bc21a0ebb17e} were permanently disabled.

disk-2Do not let them cut you!

Before you arrange to have yourself put under a knife, check out the non- invasive option of chiropractic. You cannot “uncut” and even those commercials that say minimally invasive surgery for spinal problems, they are still cutting you. It is just with a laser instead of a knife.

But without seeing a doctor, how would I know if a disc was involved with my low back pain? Let me repeat some of the tell – tell signs of a disc involvement.

If any of the descriptions listed below give you pain when you do them, then it is highly probable that your disc is being irritated. The more you have, the worse you are.

  1. A cough or sneeze
  2. Difficulty getting up out of the sitting position
  3. A hard bowel movement
  4. Bearing down or straining
  5. Is your body bent in an awkward position? In others words, are you NOT straight when you look at yourself in the mirror?

If the cause of your condition is related to the misalignment of one or more vertebra which is directly affecting the flow of nerve impulses to your body, you need to know that only specific chiropractic adjustments to gently move your spine into balance is going to fix the cause. Medications may change the symptoms you are experiencing, but drugs have serious side effects and do not address the cause of the symptom.

I was scheduled for knee surgery in one week

“I was scheduled for knee surgery in one week.  A friend said, “Just go talk to this guy and see what he thinks.”  Not only did I not need any surgery, the problem was fixed immediately.  It was a rotation misalignment of the lower leg bone where it attached into the knee area.  It’s scary to think that one doctor thinks you need surgery and the other can fix the problem in one visit with an adjustment.”

Low Back and Neck Spasms

“Dr. Chris has been my “go-to” chiropractor for more than twenty years I developed painful lower back and neck spasms after law school, due to years of intensive studying.  To cope with this  problem, I received regular chiropractic treatments which brought significant relief.

In my business I am either in meetings sitting down or in front of a computer for most of the day. This frequently aggravates my neck and back sensitivities.

I feel I can contact Dr. Chris at almost any time and he will be there to help. I always appreciate Dr. Chris’ honest opinions and candid advice about the natural remedies and supplements that benefit many symptoms.  Dr. Chris is down-to-earth, very knowledgeable and takes the time to explain the physiological reasons for your health issues.  I highly recommend Dr. Chris Hawn to anyone who wants to learn the natural way of how to get well and stay well.”

I am so pleased with the care I get from Dr. Hawn

“My name is Andrew Louch and I am so pleased with the care I get from Dr. Hawn that I wanted to join the many other people on his office wall and website giving a testimonial. They all have a great story and I wanted to share mine.

I’ve been going to Dr. Hawn for about a year and a half and it’s the best service and chiropractic technique/work I’ve ever received.  I first started going to chiropractors over 6 years ago. One of the things that make Dr. Hawn special to me is that he is always willing to come in, even in his off hours if I need to be seen.  I am a fireman and my work as well as play is very intense and strenuous on my body. When I don’t feel just right I know it and I know where to go.  The adjustments Dr. Hawn gives are gentle and focused and unlike any that I have ever received before. He seems to know and understand the body very well. I guess it is because of his experience and the fact that he went to the famous school he always talks about, Palmer College.

Dr. Chris Hawn is a very likeable guy and he will go the extra mile for you.  I feel great to have found Dr. Hawn after my last chiropractor retired. I thank my fellow firemen for referring me to him.  I highly recommend him and you too will find as I did, that he is great in the way he interacts with his patients.”
